About

Hailing from California, Fox Racing has been present as a family business on the motocross scene in the USA since the late 1970s, and today their brand is emblematic on the motocross scene sponsoring many of the best riders in the world. This MX heritage can be seen in in the Fox Bomber adventure motorcycle gloves, which blends the light-weight minimalistic features of a motocross glove with those of more protective road-use glove, making these perfect for mixed on-road/off-road riding.

The Fox Bomber uses a variety of materials to ensure optimal comfort and protection in key areas. The back of the glove features perforated leather for ventilation and moulded plastic TPU inserts which have a carbon fibre look to cover the knuckles against impact. Inside the palm a double layer of clarino, synthetic leather is used to ensure abrasion resistance to the most sensitive area of the hand. The Bomber S version of this glove replaces the synthetic Lorica material in the palm of the hand with full leather material for better street protection.

Lycra material is used between each of the fingers for maximum comfort, and stretch material can be found on the side of the gloves to ensure a good fit to the hand. A nice addition are the silicone grip material on the fingertips of the index and middle finger to ensure optimal rider grip on the bike’s levers. A simple velcro retention strap fixed to a neoprene cuff is used to keep the glove tightly in place.

The only omission in an otherwise great design would be the absence of sliders and more protective material on the inside and outside edges of the hand, which will hamper the gloves ability to handle a crash on tarmac. Given the gloves very affordable price-point and off-road bias, this omission is somewhat expected.

In short as an entry-level offering in the adventure motorcycle gloves segment, the Fox Bomber provides a good compromise between comfort, breathability and protection. However given the absence of protection on the sides of the glove the Fox Bomber is best used for mostly dirt and city riding, and not serious touring.

About

Based in Idaho, USA Klim have been making motorcycle gear since 2005, filling a niche in the market for highly technical gear designed for serious offroad riding. The Dakar Pro is Klim’s answer to riders looking for a lightweight short cuff adventure motorcycle glove to be used offroad and in warm conditions.

With a primary construction of goat-skin leather on the back and palm of the hand and with a secondary construction of breathable corded nylon stretch material, the Dakar Pro features a full abrasion resistance package with some comfort baked in. For impact protection, the glove incorporates Poron XRD padding, on both the knuckles fingers and in the heel of the hand, which is step up from conventional foam, in case you  need to catch yourself in a fall.

Small ventilation holes through the padding at the back of the glove and in the palm allows air to filter through, ensuring some temperature control in warm weather or high exertion riding. Discreet reflective 3M Scotchlite decals provide additional visibility at night and a simple velcro retention strap keeps the glove securely in place. Both the index and thumb feature touch-screen sensitive material, enabling the use of your smartphone or GPS without taking your gloves off.

The versatility of the Dakar Pro really comes to light, it combines the short cuff ergonomics and feel of an MX glove with the solid leather construction of a road gloves, the subdued ventilation scheme also means it can be used going into spring and autumn if need be, stretching the usability of these adventure motorcycle gloves. The only omission in terms of protection is on the outside of the hand alongside the pinky finger, where no additional padding of reinforcement is provided.

Given the affordable price and range of use, the Dakar Pro is a good pick for any rider planning on riding offroad or who simply want a no-frills comfortable adventure motorcycle glove. It is also a Klim product, which means you are getting premium construction from a reputable brand.

About

The Sand 3 series is one of Dutch company Rev’it’s most iconic lines of motorcycle apparel, the Sand 3 gloves are no different, boasting a unique design and a very generous protection package it is easy to see why they are one of the most popular motorcycle gloves on the market at present.

Designed for summer and mid-season riding, Rev’it’s emphasis on breathability can be seen throughout the construction of the glove. The top of the gloves features 3D mesh through which air can pass through but also vented honeycombed shaped hard rubber TPR protectors that fully cover the knuckles and upper fingers. The remaining material on the gloves, comprised of flexible goat-skin leather and 500 Denier PWR Shell, Rev’it’s version of Cordura provides abrasion resistance on the high impact zone.

The Sand 3 adventure motorcycle gloves have a number of other safety features baked in. The finger-tips are full encased in leather and are backed by small Temperfoam inserts for some light impact protection. In addition, the heel of the hand integrates a large TPR slider which is backed by Temperfoam to cover falls on the inside of the palm. The thumb is also covered by a small TPR protector which is reinforced by additional leather panel on the side of the glove.

One of the less obvious features on the Sand 3 is the external stitching Rev’it uses on the glove to ensure a seamless and comfortable fit of the gloves on the hand, as well the use of stretch material between the fingers for some additional comfort and breathability. Both the thumb and index fingers are covered with smartphone sensitive material which allows the use of a device with the gloves on. A simple but generous velcro strap incorporating a small gusset holds the glove firmly in place.

Combining good ventilation with an excellent protection package, the Sand 3 is the weapon of choice when your riding conditions range from fast, cool tarmac to rugged conditions in harsh temperatures. The Sand 3 adventure motorcycle gloves deliver on everything you would expect in terms of protection and safety on the road whilst still being breathable enough to keep your fingers from overheating on a tough technical ride.

ABOUT

Named after a mountain flower in the Italian Alps and hailing from Treviso, Alpinestars is one of the most iconic motorsport gear manufacturers. Renowned for their leather racing suits, Alpinestars have more recently expanded their range to include adventure-touring, where the Corozal Drystar gloves features, to accommodate growing interest in the segment.

The Corozal Drystar adventure motorcycle gloves are designed specifically for wet weather riding, it features Alpinestars proprietary waterproof material called Drystar which is bonded to the outer glove to create one immovable layer, it also incorporates some light insulation to maintain warmth in the rain. Whilst not backed by a guarantee such as Goretex one can expect reasonable performance out of the Drystar waterproof layer, which features in a number of Alpinestars products.

Padded foam protectors can be found on the heel of the hand, on the outside of the thumb, on the fingers and just below the pinky, offering a comprehensive safety package to guard against impacts. The moulded hard knuckle protector is covered in synthetic leather material which incorporates a reflective strip for night-time visibility. An additional safety feature is the 3rd and 4th finger bridge panel which keeps both fingers tucked together to prevent them rolling or separating on impact.

The Corozal sits somewhere between a touring cut and a more offroad biased short cuff, which suits its adventure-touring purpose perfectly. The outer construction is mostly comprised of stretch polyamide, however, the palm features a full goatskin construction for abrasion resistance, and is further reinforced by rubberized material for additional grip in the wet.  A cuff neoprene material creates a comfortable seal around the wrist and an elasticated velcro closure keeps the glove firmly in place.

The addition of a touch screen compatible material on the index is a welcome feature, however, the omission of this on the thumb might hinder some users. A handy visor wipe on the inside of the thumb reinforces the Corozal’s readiness for wet riding conditions.

Waterproof and protective, The Corozal adventure motorcycle gloves are best suited for fall and spring riding or the odd cool shower in summer, for riding in low digit temperatures another set of gloves might be recommended, as the light insulation might not be enough to keep the cooler temperatures at bay.

About

Belgium based company Richa launched their first glove in 1952, marking the start of the brand’s foray into the motorcycle apparel industry. The company’s main focus is now exclusively motorcycle garments, keeping an emphasis on producing quality products and partnering with other brands such as Gore-Tex and D3O to keep their design philosophy alive.

The Richa Cold Protect is the fruit of one such partnership, with the GTX denomination denoting the inclusion of full Gore-Tex waterproof liner in the construction of these gloves.  The advantages of this are several, Gore-Tex produces some of the best, proven breathable and waterproof material on the market, all Gore-Tex are also back by a lifetime “keep you dry” guarantee, if it leaks, Gore-Tex will test and replace the product if found faulty. The reason they can do this is because all Gore-Tex products are independently tested by them, if the product is not up to their exacting standards, then it cannot use the waterproof material.

The construction of the Cold-Protect GTX is a mix of leather and textile with leather featuring more prominently on the palm and sides of the glove and stretchable Nyspan material being included on the back and fingers for more adjustment. A flexible, flat polyurethane protector provides impact protection on the knuckles, whilst the second and third fingers feature some padding at the top of the digits.

One area that Richa have also covered extensively is the outside of the pinky and palm which feature a hard-wearing superfabric slider, designed to proved extended abrasion resistance on tarmac. Not surprising the protective features of the glove earn it a CE rating for use on the road.

The full-length cuff is ideal for cold weather touring, blocking out the cold and the rain without proving too bulky and features two velcro restraining straps for a secure fit on the hand. The insides of the gloves are fully lined with 3M Thinsulate thermal insulation to keep your digits warm, making the glove well suited for two season, cold weather riding.

Given the inclusion of the Gore-Tex membrane, a comprehensive protection package and insulated interior, the Richa Cold Protect have all the hallmarks of a great pair of winter adventure motorcycle gloves, however what makes this glove truly special is its very affordable price point. Offering the same features of other premium winter motorcycle gloves but at nearly half the price.
