About

The Paragon 5 is a supremely versatile entry-level adventure motorcycle jacket produced by British gear manufacturer RST. What sets the Paragon 5 apart is that it punches way above its weight when it comes to delivering on features that are normally found on much pricier jackets.

Protections is assured by a full complement of CE level 1 protectors in the elbow and shoulder areas and the back is covered by a CE level 2 back protector as standard – something most manufacturers skimp on. Abrasion resistance is provided by a polyester outer shell with ballistic reinforcements in the high impact areas in the shoulders and elbows. In addition, the whole jacket has a Teflon coating applied to it to fend off rain and dirt.

For hot weather, there are a total of eight vents on the jacket, two on the arms, four on the front and two on the back, which are all closed off by waterproof zippers. When the rain comes, the non-removable Sinaqua waterproof membrane has you covered. This membrane does block off the vents, meaning the air does not directly reach your skin but does provide cooling as it sits in between the outer shell and the inner mesh liner. When the temperature drops, a fully removable quilted liner is provided with the jacket as standard to keep you warm on those colder days.

The fit is on the Paragon 5 is adjustable thanks to a multitude of straps in the key areas, there is also ample storage space provided by the numerous pockets and the jacket has additional safety features built-in thanks to its cleverly concealed grey reflective decals.

All in, the RST Paragon 5 provides outstanding value for money for its price point and ticks many of the boxes of a hard-wearing adventure motorcycle jacket. The only consideration is the fixed waterproof membrane, if riding consistently in hot weather, another jacket with a removable liner to provide direct ventilation might be preferable. Hot weather, cool temperatures, rain or snow, the Paragon 5 has you covered.

The Olympia Troy’s looks are deceiving, beyond the army-inspired jacket comes a whole heap of features and design elements which make it stand out from the competition. ABOUT

Dutch motorcycle gear company Rev’it has grown from its inception in 1995 to become one of the market leaders in the adventure riding market, its foundation; to inspire people to ride. The Sand 3 jacket, now in its third iteration is an icon in the adventure gear segment thanks to Rev’it’s outstanding quality, finish and their attention to detail.

The Sand 3 adventure motorcycle jacket features Rev’it’s proprietary Seeflex armour in the arms and shoulders which are CE level 2 rated and perforated to increase ventilation. The outer shell is made of 600 denier polyester with polyamide reinforcements (think nylon) in the elbows and shoulders for extra abrasion resistance. A detachable Hydratex liner on the inside of the jacket provides waterproofing for when it rains and a removable thermal liner complements the package for all-weather protection and comfort.

Ventilation for hot weather riding is provided through two large zips on the front, dual vertical zips on the back as well as two massive arm zips guaranteed to flow large quantities of air.  Straps around the waist and arms provide endless adjustability and two large pockets on the front provide easy storage access even with gloves on, behind those pockets there are two fleece-lined hand-warmers on those cold days. A large pocket on the rear of the jacket serves as handy storage for extra gloves, maps or other equipment.

A unique inclusion on the Sand 3 are the set of military Molle straps along the front and upper part of the jacket which can be used as anchor points for a neck brace, action cameras or an emergency GPS localisation devices such as SPOT or Garmin.

Rev’it have omitted to include a back protector as standard and instead provide a foam insert, fortunately, an aftermarket can easily be retrofitted to provide a full protection package. As a jacket ready for your everyday commute or far-reaching adventures, the Sand 3 adventure motorcycle jacket hits the mark.

About

ICON is an American motorcycle gear brand based in Portland, Oregon that is heavily inspired by urban street riding and sportbikes. ICON’s gear usually features brash design, bright colours and plenty of logos and branding however their adventure segment, exemplified by the DKR range, marks a departure from the norm for the company and is worth some serious consideration.

Waterproofing is the name off the game with the Raiden DKR, like its predecessor it offers a fully waterproof exterior shell, comprised of ICON’s proprietary Hycor material which is a nylon chassis laminated to a waterproof membrane to create a single piece of fabric. The DKR jacket also features ripstop material to protect against tearing and is Teflon coated to further increase its water-repellency.

The elbows, shoulders and back are outfitted with D3O CE level 1 protectors to guard against impacts and the arms are further protected against abrasion with nylon reinforcement panels in case of a slide.

There are three vents on the ICON Raiden DKR jacket, two vents on the front that feed directly to the body and one long vent on the back that serves as an exhaust for moisture and heat. A Thermolite thermal liner complements the winter readiness of this jacket and features mesh inserts to allow the vents in the jacket to flow even when wearing the liner.

Some nice additional touches include a front zipper storm flap that is closed-off by rare earth magnets, a small clamp on the chest to retain the hose from your water bladder and as with all ICON jackets, a pendant of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travellers hidden in the chest pocket.

If winter riding or rain form part of your travel and you are looking for something that stands out from the norm, the ICON Raiden DKR waterproof adventure motorcycle jacket could be for you.

About

Klim is an American gear manufacturer that first became known for making technical garments for snowmobiles and motorised winter sports. In 2005 they transitioned this expertise into the development of specialist motorcycle equipment for cold and inclement weather. Klim is now a market leader in high-end motorcycle gear, featuring many premium materials such as Gore-Tex and Cordura which help maintain Klim’s reputation for quality and function.

The Carlsbad adventure motorcycle jacket is designed to be a technical, lightweight jacket for use mostly offroad. It is a successor to the Latitude jacket which is more geared towards touring. The jacket features an integrated Gore-Tex membrane, which is the gold standard for waterproofing and is guaranteed to keep you dry whilst also providing high breathability when moisture builds up inside the shell. For cooling and hot days the jacket feature six air vents, two on the front, forearms and back, which are all covered by waterproof zips.

The outer shell is reinforced with 500 denier ripstop nylon on the arms and shoulder and the jacket comes standard with D3O level 1 armour, which is removable and can be upgraded to CE level 2 for higher impact protection. Reflective laminated 3M material is strategically placed on the jacket to provide additional safety and visibility at night.

The cut of the Carlsbad is boxy and relaxed, in true North American fashion with adjustability only provided in the forearms. Inside the jacket, there is no thermal liner but there is hidden stash pocket for keeping valuables safe on long trips. The outside features two large glove-friendly storage pockets with two fleece-lined hand warmers tucked behind them.

The Carlsbad is designed for those adventures where weight and all-around weather protection are critical, the laminated Gore-Tex membrane ensures the best waterproofing possible and removes the need to carry a separate liner. The streamlined and no-frills design of the Carlsbad ensures that comfort on the bike is a priority making this the perfect package when rain and dirt are on the horizon.

ABOUT

The Poseidon 2 jacket from Dutch company Rev’it is at the top of the line of all-weather adventure motorcycle jackets with a number of premium features and a price to match. Designed mostly for touring rather than pure offroad, the Poseidon 2 packs a heap of features that equip it for tacking any condition on the road.

Most importantly, the jacket incorporates a full suite of 400 denier Gore-Tex nylon which makes the garment fully waterproof and abrasion-resistant. Unlike other waterproof membranes Gore-Tex garments are guaranteed for life to keep you dry, should the material fail, Gore-Tex will repair, refund or exchange the item. For additional protection, the elbows on the Neptune 2 are further reinforced with a flexible layer of SuperFabric material which is comprised of tiny epoxy-based plates that provide additional abrasion resistance.

To provide impact protection there are Seeflex CE level 2 protectors in the elbows and shoulders, which are flexible, temperature stable and perforated for breathability. The cut as with most Rev’it jacket is more tailored to European builds but is also fully adjustable thanks to numerous straps on the arms, forearms and waist.

A nice touch on Rev’it’s high-end jackets are the rare earth magnetic fasteners which allow the front vents of the jacket to be opened and fastened in seconds whilst on the bike. The two arm and back vents also guarantee a large amount of air to be flown into the jacket for hot weather riding making the Poseidon a true four-season touring jacket.

The layout is similar to most Rev’it jackets with two waterproof storage pockets on the front, fleece-lined hand warmers hidden behind them and a large storage pouch in the rear. A nice addition is the removable storm collar covering the neck and face which will protect the rider against inclement weather on those colder months.

The only omission in the Poseidon 2 is a back protector which needs to be purchased separately. Despite this, Poseidon 2 adventure motorcycle jacket is capable of weathering any obstacle you put it through making it a definitive tool for all-weather, all seasons touring.
