About

The Alpha Chino is brought to us by Dutch motorcycle clothing company Rev’it as part of their urban collection designed mainly for commuting and short trips on the motorcycle. Unlike most motorcycle gear, the Alpha Chino is remarkably subtle in the way it delivers its safety features, nothing about these pants makes them stand out as a motorcycle garment, you’d be however mistaken if you thought there was no protection baked into these pants.

The primary construction of the Alpha Chino is a blend of Cordura and Cotton which is tripled stitched at the seams to create a unique compromise between comfort and abrasion resistance. In addition, Rev’it have ingeniously covered the knees, hips and seat of the pants with an additional layer of their proprietary PWR which is a nylon knit which has similar properties to Kevlar, to ensure your main abrasion zones are fully covered in case of a slide.

Impact protection has also not been omitted with Rev’it having fitted the pants with its own brand of Seesmart knee protectors which are flexible, breathable and rated to CE Level 1. The Seemart protector are extremely unassuming but their hexagonal honey-comb structure was designed to disperse energy internally rather than externally, to the user, making them the thinnest CE 1 protectors available on the market. The Alpha Chino also features pockets for additional CE  1 hip protectors which are sold separately.

Styling is discrete and minimal, you will find a standard layout of two pockets on the hips and, two pockets on the rear, with no features making these pants look any different to a regular chino to the casual observer.  The Alpha Chino might not quite pass the business casual mark for use at work however, as the outline of the knee armour will stand out a bit if observed carefully.

One thing to note is the sizing around the waistband, which is slightly off from Rev’it’s own standards, so consider going a size down.

All in Rev’it, have put in a tremendous amount of thought when designing the Alpha Chino, no other manufacturer come even close to delivering on so many protective features with such subdued looks. The Alpha Chino is the perfect piece of gear when you want to take the bike out into town or on a short day rides when you don’t want your motorcycle gear to stand out but still want the featured protection.

About

The Paragon V, now in its 5th iteration is an entry-level offering for the adventure riding segment from British company RST which offers a multitude of features that make it excellent value for riders looking for a dedicated set of adventure motorcycle pants.

The Paragon V comes outfitted as standard with CE level 1 knee protectors, a value offering which provides much-needed protection in case of an off. Should you wish to upgrade, CE2 protectors can be retrofitted to the pants and will offer twice as much impact absorption. There are also hip pockets present on the pants for additional armour pads to be fitted in.

The outer constructions is comprised of double and triple stitched polyester, a material which is typically found on most mid-range pants and provides a decent protective package in case of a slide. Furthermore, RST have done their homework, as the pants are further reinforced at the knees with additional ballistic material which provides welcome reinforcement at those critical impact zones.

The construction of the pants is well thought out; reflective decals throughout the garment provide high visibility on the road, stretch material at the thighs improves comfort and the adjustable belt loop and suspenders ensure the fit of the pants is as best as possible.

Underneath the outer shell, there is a non-removable SinAqua membrane to provide waterproofing and a quilted liner. which can be removed, to provide warmth in colder temperatures. Two sets of vents provide indirect ventilation to the wearer, to allow some moisture and heat to escape.  It is important to note however that vents are blocked off by the waterproof liner which means that on hotter days these will not vent as well as a direct ventilation system.

The attention to details really shows on the Paragon V, RST have included it all the features a rider would look for in a pair of adventure motorcycle pants. What makes the Paragon V stand out however, is that whenever rain is on the horizon there is no need to mess around with waterproof overpants or stop by the side of the road to put in a waterproof liner, just close up the vents and keep on riding. Some compromises have been made in order to reach its price point, the liner is not guaranteed waterproof as with Goretex and if direct ventilation or better protection are required then another set of motorcycle pants might be more suitable.

About

The Dakar pants from the American motorsport company Klim have a fearsome reputation in the offroad and adventure motorcycling community. Iteration after iteration the Klim have perfected the Dakar pants to become the gold standard by which all other adventure motorcycle pants are judged.

The main thing to note is that the Klim Dakar pants feature none of the niceties you will find in other adventure pants, there is no waterproof liner, no thermal liner and it comes with no protector included. Why? Modularity, so that your gear is focused to deliver exactly what you need and nothing more.

With the Dakar pants, Klim have focused their effort on creating the most durable, comfortable and protective piece of gear available on the market for offroad adventures. The main body of the Dakar pants is comprised of 600D Cordura with the knees and seat further bulked up with 840 Denier Cordura. Cordura is a named brand of nylon, with a specific weave which has had long-standing applications in the military. This has transitioned into the motorcycling industry where Cordura is known for having some of the best abrasion resistance on the market. In addition to the main material, the Klim Dakar pants feature a DWR treatment which provides some water repellency and helps fend off mud and dirt.

The Dakar adventure motorcycle pants have four pockets for D3O knee and hip protectors (not included) or if you desire a more modular setup for offroad, there is sufficient space for knees braces which can be worn in conjunction with armoured underpants for a full-protection package. For temperature control, two zippered vents are featured on the thighs to create ventilation on warm days and make the pants suitable to whatever riding conditions you go through.

To ensure optimal comfort, the Dakar chassis features breathable stretch material at the knees, crotch as well as the back of the waist and legs. The inner knees have leather panels built-in for additional grip and protection from engine heat. Some light-reflective decals on the back provide some visibility and complement the Klim Dakar package.

Streamlined and bombproof the Dakar chassis has been proven time and time again to be one of the most versatile and durable pieces of gear on the market with premium materials and construction designed to keep you safe and comfortable wherever your adventure takes you.

ABOUT

Coming to us from Rev’it, the Tornado 2 pants demonstrates to us again why the Dutch company is one of the main players on the adventure riding market. Stylish but packing some serious punch, the Tornado 2 is designed for hot weather touring and adventure motorcycling.

The first thing you will notice with the Tornado 2 adventure motorcycle pants are the massive intake panels on the thighs and lower leg. The Tornado is a fully vented pant, which means the vents are permanently open and cannot be closed off,  they are designed to take in as much air as possible to cool the wearer, ideal for those warm summer days. When the temperature drops and rain is on the horizon Rev’it have integrated a removable two in one thermal and waterproof liner into the tornado pants, these are kept together which means you won’t be able to separate the thermal liner from the Hydratex membrane, but thoughtful nonetheless.

Protection has not been forgotten, the Tornado 2 adventure motorcycle pants come standard with CE level 2 SeeFlex protectors at the knees which are perforated in a grid pattern to make them breathable as well as SeeSmart CE level 1 protectors at the hips to create a full protection package. The materials used are well thought, the knee panels, which are the most expose feature beefy 1000D PWR material while the rest of the body is made of 500D PWR polyamide, very respectable. Whilst mesh is generally weaker than a full weave construction the ventilation panels are situated away from the main impact zone and are constructed with PWR, Rev’it’s take on Cordura, for additional sturdiness.

The front of the pant feature a nifty YKK slide-lock closure for additional security, the waist is adjustable on both side, and there is stretch material for additional comfort at the knees and grip panels at the seat to make sure you don’t slide on the saddle.

For summer touring or warm weather riding the Rev’it Tornado 2 leaves nothing to be desired; protection, comfort and style in one package. The only consideration would be the purchase of separate rain over-pants which can be worn over the top if you have a chance of encountering rain in a warm climate. You’ll get them on faster, and you won’t be sweating in the warm rain from the 2 in 1 thermal and waterproof liner.

About

Klim is known for making snowmobile gear, but they also know how to turn up the heat when it comes to making warm-weather adventure gear. The companion to the Dakar adventure motorcycle pants, the Klim Mojave is designed specifically for tackling hot weather offroad riding conditions.

Unlike the Dakar, the Mojave features a full mesh construction at the forefront, which is meant to cool the wearer by taking in as much air as possible to wick away moisture and heat caused by exertion and rising temperatures on the bike. As with all mesh construction, care must be taken when riding at high speeds on tarmac as the constructions will never be as solid as full weave material, however Klim have coupled the mesh panels with high tenacity 840D Cordura on the side of the pants and in the high impact zone to ensure safety is not a concern with the Mojave.

As with most Klim gear, the protectors are sold separately, there are pockets integrated into the pants for both knee and hip protectors courtesy of D3O or alternatively, you can fit your own knee braces and armoured underpants for complete offroad protections.  Stretch material is fitted to three main areas; above the knees, at the crotch and at the back of legs to ensure mobility is not restrained and comfort on the bike is maximized. Around the waist, two cinch straps retained by velcro are fitted around the elasticated waistband ensure an optimal fit to the core of your body.

As you would expect from Klim the Mojave package is nicely finished off, with 3M reflective decals at the calves, glove-friendly zipper pulls at the pockets and leather panels on the inner leg to ensure better grip and protection on the bike. The Klim Mojave is also available in an “In the boot” configuration for those that prefer tucking in their pants into their MX boots.

Thanks to its premium materials and Klim’s meticulous construction design the Mojave adventure motorcycle pants stand out as one of the most protective mesh pants available on the market. The Mojave is the go-to pant for Enduro riders going through tough technical terrain or for riders looking for a no-compromise design for hot weather conditions.
